What is Web Summit Rio?

Hosted by one of the world's leading tech event organizers, the ultimate tech conference in Latin America welcomed more than 21,300 attendees, from 91 different countries, from Argentina to New Zealand.

Web Summit dedicates to change the gender balance in the tech world, welcoming more than 8,500 women in this year’s edition, 40% of the total number of attendees.

 Web Summit Rio covers a wide range of topics and themes related to the tech industry. Some of the main areas of focus include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, fintech, e-commerce,  climate change, telecommunications and digital marketing. Additionally, 14 tracks took place at the event, from masterclasses, roundtables, often discussions and panels on the future of technology and its impact on society . With so many different topics covered, there was something for everyone at Web Summit Rio.

 

Who are the speakers?

Web Summit Rio brings together some of the most influential and innovative minds in the tech industry. Past speakers have included CEOs, founders, and executives from companies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon, from a variety of backgrounds, including startups, established companies, investors, and media outlets. With such a diverse group of attendees, Web Summit Rio offers unparalleled networking opportunities and the chance to learn from some of the best in the business.

 

With 400 speakers, Web Summit gathered a lineup of world leaders, who are impacting their fields with unique insights to share.

 

Aiming to support the development of an ecosystem that has more women innovating and leading industries, 37% of the speakers were women.

 

Besides, 974 startups, from 42 different countries, from bootstrapped to unicorns, were being represented. Roughly 22% are women founded.

Day 1:

Meredith Whittaker, the president of encrypted messaging app Signal and chief advisor to the AI Now Institute:

  • Building an app from the ground up;
  • How to build an app without falling into the constraints of the mainstream tech ecosystem.
  • Is it possible to sustain a business that doesn’t rely on harvesting user data?


Besides those topics, the main highlight was when Whittaker responded to an example of ChatGPT producing incorrect information: “We should not be championing this as something you add on to a search engine where people go to find information they don’t already know and check facts ,” said the Signal president.

 

Chelsea Manning, security consultant at Nym:

  • Cybersecurity, privacy, AI and Web3.
  • Should technologists be held to the same ethical standards as doctors and lawyers?

 

Chelsea explains the importance of deconstructing the tech credo “move fast and break things”:  “ While we’re moving fast and breaking things, we have to think of the consequences of what that means” .

 

Day 2:

Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub:

  • The future of coding.
  • 46% of code can be written by GitHub’s new GPT-4 enabled AI assistant Copilot X.
  • A 15-minute challenge to build a working app using Copilot X live on stage.
  • All the steps of recreating the classic game of Snake.
  • The era of the 10x developer.

 

“ Imagine 10 days of work done in a single day, 10 hours of work done in a single hour, and 10 minutes of work done with a single prompt command ”, says the CEO.


Kathleen Breitman, Tezos co-founder, and Daniel Vogel, Bitso co-founder and CEO:

  • Is the crypto winter ever going to end?
  • Crypto has been gaining ground as a means for US users to transfer money to their families in Mexico.


Fabiele Nunes, Startup Mundi:

  • Everybody is solving all these technological problems.
  • People and new skills.
  • Simulating the journey of taking an innovative idea from conception to scalability.

Day 3

Dan Westgarth, COO of Deel:

  • AI will improve your job, but regulation is key.
  • Human in the loop: if the AI fails, a human steps in and take over.


“ Regulation drives innovation. We saw that in countries that regulated fintech and payments early on. We saw businesses within those countries innovate and build really amazing solutions ,” explained the COO.


The EdTech Jade Autism was the winner of the PITCH competition at Web Summit Rio.

  • Almost a thousand other competitors.
  • Seeks to promote inclusive education through software.
  • Helps children and adolescents with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).
  • The edtech solution offers schools and teachers individualized approaches to each student. 
  • Today, the proposal reaches 160,000 people from various countries.
